Michigan Health Insurance Basics

By Jeff Cline

Blue Shield Blue Cross of Michigan and group based HMO plans must be written as Guarantee issue plans only. All other carriers are not restricted in this way. Other Michigan health insurance carriers can be underwritten individually.

Not only is BCBS of MI required to base rates on a community rather then a individual, they must also not exclude a individual based on a medical condition. This makes it possible for many uninsurable people to get insurance. They must base their rates on a community rate as well.

Individual carriers may exclude and limit coverage based on current or prior medical conditions. They can take advanatage of excluding pre existing conditions for up to 12 months also. They do not have to allow individuals to get credit for pre ex just for having prior coverage either.

Individual health insurance base their rates on many factors. All of which they choose. These factors can change but are most often, current market, age groups, locations and type of plan.

Michigan does offer options that meet the needs of the low income community that may not be able to afford individual health insurance. Their MIChild plan is a Childrens Health Insurance Plan. For those that meet the income requirement and a few other requirements it covers office visits, prescriptions, hospitalization and dental to name a few.

The Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) offers options for other eligible low income individuals. These are plans you must qualify for based on the determination of the Department of Human Resource. There are a few options depending on your needs.

Speaking of the MDCH, they offer a huge resource of information for health insurance seekers. Whether your looking for individual, Medicaid or just health questions ion general. It is a good site to find out about providers and carriers as well.

The State of Michigan works hard to get the resources out there for it's citizens. They work hard to make sure that all individuals has access to health insurance and healthcare. They are steadily working to lower the 11.4% uninsured rate. - 15485
